Tom Bunting

ARCHITECT

A founding Partner of FORMOSIS architecture, and previously of Bunting Coady Architects, Tom has over thirty years of professional experience with an extensive background in commercial, residential, institutional and industrial architecture. His vision and focus helped Bunting Coady Architects to achieve
international recognition for its work in the evolution of sustainable and energy efficient architecture and design. A keen proponent of collaborative working, Tom particularly enjoys working with teams to produce
a unique and targeted response to each design challenge, helping to create inspirational, flexible, and durable spaces that are better able to accommodate functional requirements as they change over time.

Respected for his detailed understanding of Master Planning and modern design, Tom possesses an extensive knowledge of established and emerging design languages. Throughout his career he helped to pioneer a new language of passive building design which focuses on how climatic response, energy
consumption, and material choices can be a primary form and architectural generator, in addition to the traditional influences of social and built form context.

Tom’s experience with large scale, multi-building master plan sites in Vancouver and Calgary dates back to the 90’s with the master planning of Discovery Park + Broadway Tech Centre.

Over the course of his career he has contributed to many mixed-use master plans from silver free for concert properties, to several academic master plans for three (3) Kwantlen Polytechnic University Campus. Currently he is working on the re-development of Semiahmoo Shopping Centre into a mixed- use town centre.

Tom has been a sessional lecturer with the UBC School of Architecture and has served multiple terms on all major Urban Design Panels in the Metro area from Surrey to Whistler, twice on the Vancouver Urban Design Panel – once as Chairperson, and has also been an Advisory Member of the Vancouver Development Permit Board. These City board experiences give a unique perspective to the inner workings of the Planning and Approvals processes.

Scott is passionate about working through complex architectural problems and creating a great experience for clients, collaborators, and building occupants.

Scott’s curiosity drives him to embrace new challenges and better understand stakeholders. He enjoys building relationships with municipal counterparts in Vancouver and environs while shepherding a project through approvals.

He has a keen interest in passive energy design and the material ecology of buildings. Scott’s appreciation for the unique west coast climate that drew him from Ontario extends to an interest in building durability and moisture.
